Landscapes are experiences to be composed and destinations to return to

We approach landscape design as a form of scenography—the thoughtful arrangement of land, light, plants, materials, and movement to create places that transform how one feels within them.

Our clients seek authorship, stewardship, and environments that feel both transportive and grounded.

A Selective Studio

Walkabout accepts a limited number of landscape commissions each year. We accept projects where alignment is mutual.

Each project is approached as a singular work — fully designed, curated, and guided from concept through construction under a unified vision. Our process is immersive and collaborative, best suited to clients seeking depth, refinement, and enduring value.

Our work requires trust, openness to refinement, and respect for the pace and mannor of thoughtful design. In return, we offer depth of attention, technical rigor, and landscapes of enduring presence.

If you are interested in commissioning Walkabout, we invite you to review our approach below.

Commissions Process

1. Initial Inquiry
Prospective clients complete our inquiry form with details about property, timeline, and aspirations.

2. Discovery Consultation
Selected inquiries are invited into a site consultation to discuss vision, site conditions, and scope alignment.

3. Design Commission
A formal design agreement establishes creative direction, budget framework, and implementation strategy.

4. Integrated Construction
Walkabout leads construction with disciplined oversight, ensuring continuity between concept and craft.

5. Stewardship & Evolution
We guide the long-term maturation of the landscape, honoring its seasonal and ecological shifts.

Walkabout Design

Walkabout’s design process balances attentiveness with ease. It unfolds in three distinct phases, moving from what is natural and inherent in the site toward what is intentionally shaped and refined. Our goal is scenography—achieved through coherence between the client’s desires, the site’s potential, and the designer’s skill and passion.

Our signature compositions begin on paper, evolve through custom decisions made during construction, and are refined over time through thoughtful maintenance. When designer, client, and site are aligned, the result is both experiential and manageable—gardens with distinct character and enduring integrity. The depth of our process heightens both the psychological and physical experience of inhabiting your landscape.

Design & Planning

Design and planning initiate the process and establish the framework for project success. This phase integrates stakeholder goals with available resources and requires the greatest investment of time and strategic thought.

Concept plans define the spatial layout and establish stylistic direction. Once the concept is approved and the construction deposit is received, we move into construction planning. This phase focuses on how the landscape will function within its environment. Materials are selected, details are refined, and the design is calibrated to support the client’s lifestyle.

Construction & On-Site Design

On-site design is a dialogue with nature that requires ingenuity and responsiveness. During construction, we incorporate real-time observations and stakeholder input, allowing for thoughtful adjustments and nuanced improvisation.

Planting is guided by the design intent but intentionally flexible. While informed by the planting plan, it is refined on-site to respond to sightlines, color relationships, texture, and composition. This approach creates immersive, scenographic landscapes that feel cohesive and alive.

Maintenance & Long-Term Quality

A structured maintenance regimen is essential to long-term quality. Our landscapes are designed to age naturally and beautifully, but they require informed stewardship.

Maintenance is not uniform. Each garden demands engagement with its intrinsic character and evolving ecology. We view maintenance as a participatory process—one that sustains integrity while allowing the landscape to mature with intention.
